Powderpuff Football Arrives at San Mateo

Girls playing football and getting dirty. What’s not to enjoy?  Although football is generally a male dominated sport, San Mateo High School started a new tradition: Powder-puff Football. On April 16th, girls from each grade came together to form a team to represent there respective grades.

Originally, two games were supposed to be played with the juniors playing the freshman and the seniors playing the sophomore with the winning teams will than advance into the championship.  There weren’t enough freshmen so they ended up combining with the sophomores and the new frosh-soph team ended up winning the whole tournament defeating the juniors and seniors.

An annual tradition at many schools, the game consists of high school girls who don’t mind getting messy.  What is supposed to occur is a game of innocent flag football, but the game usually ends up in a game of rough tackle football.  No pads or helmets are worn.  Arms will be pulled; ankles will be sprained but its okay because safety contracts are signed ahead of time.

The puny freshman team are usually the underdogs, not fully understanding what they are getting themselves into and will probably get dominated by the upperclasswomen.  Although some schools play for fun and others play for purpose, the funds and concession stand money will all go to the junior class of 2011.

Not only is the main focus on the girls on the field, but also the guys can get involved by showing their team spirit.  Instead of girl cheerleaders, the guys take a turn by dressing up and cheering, usually from a comical standpoint.

Go out and support your lady bearcats as they get down and dirty!
