Starting Off a Good Year of Sports

With a new school year comes a new sports year and what athlete, fan, or supervisor would want anything more than to start the year off with some wins! This fall SMHS athletes are participating in football, cheerleading, golf (boys/girls), tennis (girls), volleyball, cross country, and water polo (boys/girls).

Last year the Varsity Volleyball team, went all the way to CCS (Central Coast Section). “We work really well together and we are definitely going to kick butt. We made it to CCS so we did pretty well! And we are definitely capable of doing it again this year.” said Varsity Volleyball player, Haley Goell (junior). Positive attitude from team players is a perfect way to get everyone excited for this year’s season.

Not only is our Volleyball team; working its butt off, but our Football team is too. Practicing 6 times a week, the Varsity football team works on stepping up their game, now heading into a more competitive division. Dumisani Sa-Ra (junior) the Running back and Corner for varsity says, “The team looks really solid this year, tons of talent, both new and old, I feel confident that we will do well in this higher division. The varsity football team did pretty well last year, almost made it to the playoffs, but we’re more than determined to do better than we did previous years.” Talk about taking the season head on. All an athlete really needs is determination, which our SMHS football players have, to succeed this season.

How else do football players get motivation? Of course the cheerleaders! Alyssa Rich (junior) says, “The squad is doing well, we communicate well with each other and in our upcoming events I think we will still be doing as well as we are now if not better. I would say our main goal is to achieve as many crazy and exciting stunts as we can.” No one else can pump up a crowd more than a squad of cheerleaders, motivating everyone to cheer the next play in the game.

Not every sport is on a field made out of grass, wood, or concrete, this season water polo is making a splash while they try to swim their way to the top. “Well we’re doing better than last year! We are probably not going to win many games because as a team we are pretty inexperienced and we don’t have a JV team compared to the other schools that have a much bigger water polo program. I think we can do better this year and especially since our returning players who know what to expect. I think as a team we’re all improving our swimming and our skills such as throwing and shooting, and we need to work on communicating and working together in the pool.” said Hanny Octaviani (junior), a member of the varsity water polo team.

Athletes of all different sports are excited and pumped up to start playing their favorite sports. As the fall season starts, the sports teams get more and more competitive. No sport is more important than another! So let’s start the fall season of sports off energetic and motivated and route on SMHS to victory!
