The Red Cross Club raises awareness and funds for disaster preparedness. Working with the Bay Area’s Red Cross chapter as official Red Cross volunteers, club members benefit their community by giving disaster preparedness presentations at elementary schools, participating in walk-a-thons.

“I went to Leadership Development Camp during the summer and met so many Red Crossers and became really close friends, and got CPR and First Aid Certified!” said Tiffany Lee, a devoted member of the club in 2013-14.

Each year, SMHS Red Cross volunteers work with school for the California ShakeOut, the biggest earthquake drill throughout the state that every public school participates in.

“It’s a big deal because it brings awareness to the fact that we are in an earthquake zone. During the ShakeOut we make sure all students are following procedure, stop drop and cover, and that teachers are following protocol. We also split up into departments monitoring the halls, handling first aid, etc. It’s a great opportunity and experience,” said Juhie Desai, one of the two club presidents in the 2013-14 school year.

After the devastating 2013 typhoon in the Philippines, the Red Cross Club collaborated with the Filipino club to raise funds to assist the typhoon survivors through bake sales and t-shirt sales.

“I like that the students have such good intentions and are willing to help people in need. It’s also great that they are helping the school be prepared for disaster,” said Ms. Moore, the club’s adviser.

Each month, co-presidents Lucy Dai-He and Juhie attend the Youth Executive Board, where student Red Cross representatives from schools all over the Bay Area meet to discuss upcoming events.

If you’d like to help keep Mateo prepared for earthquakes and help those affected by disaster, please stop by Ms. Moore’s classroom A232 at lunch on Tuesdays.
