Mrs. Abernathy

OSHEabernathyprofMrs. Abernathy is one of the most versatile teachers I know. While her main focus right now is teaching Contemporary World Studies to mostly freshmen, she has taught various classes in different subjects to all different grades. Mrs. Abernathy has experienced working at many schools throughout her years of teaching, but she feels that there is something special about San Mateo High School.

Mrs. Abernathy is able to keep a good balance of work in class and at home, and truly wants all of her students to succeed. She tries her best to relieve the pressures of learning, but still makes sure to motivate students on tests and assignments. A student is able to learn in an ever-changing environment, having deep discussions, working on projects, and sometimes even watching a movie. Curriculum in C.W.S. covers many places in the world including Mexico, Rwanda, Iran, and the globe at large.

She represents our bearcat community most closely to Sojourn to the Past, an immersion program for juniors and seniors. Students that attend will spend ten days following the path of the civil rights movement in the South. Mrs. Abernathy is very passionate on the subject and hopes that many SMHS students can go every year.

Mrs. Abernathy is usually in her room after school and loves talking to students about any and all subjects or daily challenges. Don’t be afraid to drop in and chat with her.
