Ms. Beard: School Secretary

ZHNEbeardSat behind her desk in Student Services filled with neat piles of important papers and filing folders, Ms. Beard professionally multitasks: flipping through stacks of papers, answering phone calls, and helping teachers passing through the office at the same time. With her perfectly coordinated ensemble of matching jewelry and a purple be-jeweled lanyard, Ms. Beard radiates spirit, showing she’s at home in San Mateo.

Although Ms. Beard doesn’t interact with students as a teacher, she is just as important to the Bearcat campus as any other new staff member. As Administrative Assistant to the Principle, she essentially runs the front office. In addition to supporting Ms. Shiu, managing the school bells, and helping lost parents, Ms. Beard also acts as a “liaison between teachers and substitutes” by preparing attendance sheets and managing prep periods.

Ms. Beard switched from working in human resources at the SMUHSD Office to her current job at SMHS this summer. Knowing the fact that there aren’t many non-teacher jobs available at school sites, she decided to “take a chance” and apply for the job. “I have a lot of spirit,” Ms. Beard said, “ which I thought would fit well with the school.”

Once she leaves school in the afternoon, Ms. Beard enjoys socializing in other settings. Whether it’s a party, a small gathering, or a dinner, the social environment and interactions bring joy to her life. Ms. Beard also loves shopping, styling, and travelling, as well as working out and being healthy. In high school, she participated in both volleyball and softball. She continues her love of sports by exercising extensively.

“Interacting with parents, students, and teachers” is Ms. Beard’s favorite part of her job. Working in the helping field, she gets a lot of satisfaction from helping other people, whether it’s the principal, other staff members, parents, or students. As advice for high school students, she said, “Don’t be afraid to take risks and follow your dreams. Life is a lot simpler before you have responsibilities.”

“Ms. Beard is eager to learn and has jumped into her position at the office,” said Ms. Shiu, our school Principal. “She has done a great job at keeping up with her work and is already a part of the Bearcat family.”

Accepting the warm Bearcat spirit and people with wide open arms, Ms. Beard wishes to continue her growth within the district and to become more involved in school life.  “I am enjoying my time at San Mateo,” she said, “I hope to have a long and prosperous relationship with the school.”
