Ms. Samsi: French Teacher Enthusiast

Ms. Samsi takes a break from teaching to pose for a quick picture.

Dorothy Samsi, a new teacher for the world language department, can be found in room A146, teaching French 5-6 to her first class of SMHS students. When walking into the class, the only language heard is French. She, no doubt, teaches with the same incredible fluency and draws the entire class’ attention to her. Dorothy Samsi is not new to the job though. This is actually her seventh year teaching French. Before San Mateo High, she taught at St. Francis DeSales, a Catholic school in Columbus, Ohio. “SMHS is much bigger and more diverse than St. Francis, and the school is public
while St. Francis was private,” she said when comparing the two schools.
Her goals for this year vary from topic to topic but her overall goal for teaching is the success of her students. “I want my students to be more comfortable speaking and writing in French by the end of the school year.”
She is still getting used to her new schedule for this year. It consists of waking up and feeding her kids, taking them to school, eating lunch and then arriving at 12:30 for 6th period, since she only teaches during that period and she usually stays until 3:15. Her after-school life involves her 2 kids. She spends most of her free time volunteering at her son’s preschool and her daughter’s elementary school. Along with being a successful mother, she enjoys hiking and cycling, as well as cooking Indian food since her husband is Indian. Ms. Samsi continues the undiscovered talent in our school. She has already done a half-marathon and is looking forward to doing another. Also, ironically, she can shear a sheep.
Ms. Samsi lives a diverse lifestyle. Before moving to California in January, she lived in Luxembourg, explaining why she is fluent in French. But before it all, she was born and brought up in Ohio, where she attended college; Ohio State.
Not only does Ms. Samsi make an influence on her students, but she also makes an impact on her fellow co workers. Ms. Bunch, the teacher Ms. Samsi shares a classroom with is extremely happy to be working with her this year. With a smile across her face, Ms. Bunch kind- heartedly stated “Ms. Samsi is creative and fun. She will be an enriching addition to our faculty.”
Overall, Ms. Samsi looks forward to teaching here at San Mateo High School. “It’s going to be a great school to teach at,” she said happily.
Let’s all give her a big Bearcat welcome to our faculty!
