Cross Country Team Profile

Cross country crosses San Mateo’s runner’s minds as it comes into season. Fifteen dedicated runners come together to face against the other 16 schools in the district. Both their feet and their hearts are ready to win.

The first meet will be held at Westmoor High School, they will be facing 16 different schools, resulting in over 150 runners at the meet. It will be a 2.9 mile run up difficult hills and paths. The meet will be in Daly City on Thursday, September 11, 2014.

Although Cross country is a great and fun sport it is “an indomitable sport, its a very hard sport. It takes an extremely dedicated runner in order to compete and for me I’m pleased to see those runners,” said Cross Country coach, Ed Riley.

Another great aspect of cross country is the team bond they share, its a “nice outlet running with people and getting to know them and especially getting to know the underclassmen and help welcome them to San Mateo. I joined Cross Country because I like to run and wanted to be a part of San Mateo and figured this was the best way possible,” said Cross Country captain Ilya Rozenblat, Senior and “I love the fact that everyone is a team and we always push each other to run faster and longer,” said hurdler and co-co-captain of the cross country team, Sebastian Lee, Junior.

Cross country team are also referred to as “The Masters of J-Walking.” “It’s not cross country until you almost get hit by a car,” said Cross Country Co-Co-Captain, Sophia Kapoor, Junior.

Cross Country is one of the most welcoming sports at San Mateo, and has a very dedicated and friendly team. “It’s hard at first but once you get used to it, it gets a lot better,” said Yuto Watanabe, Sophomore. “This is my first year of Cross Country and the team is really supportive and nice, definitely worth taking,” said Drake Kapoor, freshman. Overall, Cross Country is a great sport for all grades, and can provide a fun, inspirational, and strengthening experience.
