Track Conditioning

first official day of practice/conditioning

As spring approaches one of San Mateo’s most popular sports approaches. The first official week of track practice has ended and there have been about 30-40 people in total attendance. People are divided based on which events they participate in. The six categories of track and field athletes are long distance runners, sprinters, pole vaulters, throwers, jumpers and hurdlers. Long distance athletes typically run two laps to eight laps around the track. Sprinters run ¼ of a lap to one full lap in meets. Pole vaulters have three attempts at beating each height at meets. Throwers throw shot put, and the discus. The first two weeks have ended and the track now has claim over the field for the rest of the school year. You can join track until about the first month of practice, if you are new, they are no cuts and its a great way to spend time and energy. We will be hosting two meets at our school, including the renowned Bearcat Invitational, April 18th where hundreds of track and field athletes come to our school to compete. Currently, the track and field team has about 40 members. Sprinters take up the majority of the track and field team, followed by throwers, jumpers, long distance, and pole vaulters. “My favorite sport is track and field because we are one big family,” said Drake Kapoor, freshman. Our typical workout routines vary from running on the track to going outside of the San Mateo high school campus to Coyote Point or Ryder Park. The typical sprinting workout at Coyote point ranges from playing a competitive game of capture the flag to running up hills at the trail. The distance workout at Coyote Point involve 2-4 highlight reels(1.75 miles, rough estimate by head coach) each, hill loops(1.2 miles each), or a bride run(4.5+ miles). The Ryder workout for sprinters involves running hills, and doing burpees and push ups. The distance workout at ryder is the main Bridge Run which is 9.2 miles in length. It is hard at first but definitely worth running. “It’s a nice view of the beach, and you can think of whatever comes to your mind for long periods of time so its kind of nice,” said Ian Hoole, sophomore, distance runner. The Track and Field family has near fifty percent new members. Swing by the football field anytime throughout mid february to join the loving family.
