And the Senior Award Goes to…

Although all of our senior Bearcats are looking forward to the graduation ceremony on Thursday, May 28, some of our most amazing seniors have another special event coming up. On Wednesday, May 20, Senior Awards Night will be held at the SMHS Performing Arts Center at 6:30 p.m.

Held every year, Senior Awards Night is an invitation-only event for some of our most outstanding senior Bearcats. “It recognizes the students who really took full advantage of all opportunities,” said Ms. Paige, who is in charge of Senior Awards Night this year.

There are about 50 awards being presented on Wednesday night, a number that changes slightly from year to year. Some of the award recipients include the art certificate winners and the SMHS Class of 2015 valedictorians—all ten of them. In addition, there are also about a dozen memorial scholarships that were donated by the families of SMHS alumni. Other Bearcats will also be receiving faculty awards and scholarships donated by local community organizations. “It’s definitely a community event,” said Ms. Paige.

For many of these awards, students had to apply by themselves rather than rely on being nominated by others, often learning of the scholarship through the career center and Ms. Paige, who is the college and career adviser at SMHS. Several of our Bearcats who applied to multiple scholarships will be honored with more than one award or scholarship on the night of the ceremony next Wednesday.

“I’m really excited about putting together an awesome ceremony. And to each student who comes: just relax and enjoy,” said Ms. Paige, who has been working diligently to make sure that this year’s ceremony runs smoothly. Ms. Paige also wanted to remind students who are scheduled to line-up onstage to be at the PAC by 6:10 p.m. “It’s very important,” laughed Ms. Paige.

Senior Awards Night is a time to honor all of the outstanding work that students have accomplished in their four years at San Mateo High School. “It’s a night to celebrate each individual student, whether they’re going to a four-year or a two-year, whether they’re undeclared or undecided,” said Ms. Paige.
