Kickin’ It New School

Some Varsity players watch from the bench as their teammates fight for a goal.

Soccer tryouts lasted from Nov. 3 to Nov. 24. Many of our bearcats prepared for vigorous games and trying workouts. Tryouts were extremely stressful, requiring potential players to run several laps around the track and undertake intense drills and stretches. After many routines and scrimmages, the teams were finally decided by our new coach, Darren Shields.

Having recently taught soccer at Bowditch, Coach Shields came to San Mateo High School looking to help “rebuild the soccer program” and to recruit passionate players. He became a soccer coach because of how interested he is about the game and how much he enjoys teaching it to kids and teens.

The goals he hopes to accomplish for this upcoming season include teaching our bearcats not only how to win and play the game, but also how to be a student first. His biggest fear is that his players will not reach their full potential, which he definitely doesn’t want since his favorite soccer team is the one and only San Mateo High School.

This year, the varsity team consists of nine freshmen unlike previous years. All together, the varsity team is made up of 27. Some players may not be eligible to play since girls are not allowed to play on the SMHS team while a part of another soccer league team outside school.

The first pre-season game for the girls JV and varsity teams was Tuesday, Nov. 24. Notre Dame San Jose took the lead in the first half, scoring one goal and the Bearcats zero. Both teams fought hard in the second half but with both sides not being able to score a goal, Notre Dame San Jose was left with the win. A great start to the season, Varsity played against Mercy High School at Shoreline College on Wednesday, Dec. 2. The bearcats won 2-0, both goals scored by Muraya Guzman.

The team members are very excited for their first game against Mercy High School. Come and support our lady bearcats during their intense upcoming season.
