State Golf Champ Tells What It’s Like

18th Hole at Poppy Hills Golf CourseIt was a cold December morning in Monterey, CA.Every player  in the tourney had their game face on, making the scene a little tense. Once I walked onto the cold wet grass of the golf range, I had one goal in mind: “think positive today”, no matter what happens. My sister,Kiran, also competed in the same tournament. Kiran and I are not competitive with each other. We always root for each other and never say anything negative to one another. I love to play with my sister because I don’t feel pressured.

My sister and I went into the clubhouse to check in. Once we found out that we were playing with each other, we were so happy. We both were starting on the 10th hole at 11:30am. We walked out of the clubhouse and started to practice and loosen up before we head off to the course to play. My sister and I  been practicing for about two to three hours and it’s 11:20 and we start to head off to our starting hole because we have to be there 10 minutes before our tee time. While we were practicing, the wind and and fog drifted onto the golf course and it started to become really cold. The ice started to form on the green grass. making it a minty white green, and after about 20 minutes or so, the director of the tournament told everyone to come onto the putting green. Once everyone came onto the putting green, the director, Kelly Cimino, said that we were going to have at least an hour delay because the maintenance people didn’t want us to tear up and ruin the grass on the course and wanted everyone to play safely. My sister and I were relieved because our feet and hands started to hurt from the coldness of the wind. An  hour had passed in a blink of an eye, and soon, we were about ready to start our fun round of golf.

Throughout the round, it was interesting and exciting at times. But to make the round fun, one has to stay positive and happy because you never know what could happen, it will always be a mystery to see what will come of the rounds you play. Everyone in my group was on a role from the start to the end. If one person makes a really long putt someone else makes a similar length putt also. It was awesome playing with athletes like my sister and everyone else.

After we were done with our round, we all checked scores and signed our scorecards. The person who checked our scores was shocked by all the good scores.”Wow these scores are really good I wish I could shot like this,” he/she said. We were all set for the day and my sister, a couple friends and I were waiting around for the director to announce the scores and top three winners. Once everyone was done competing for the Girls Championship Flight, which is for the top girls playing with each other from low handicaps, the director starting to announce the winners. The director started with third place to first, and I knew that I was going to place first because I had the lowest score in the girls field. I shot a 72-71 to place first, and I was so happy because I worked so hard to win an NCGA tournament, one of the biggest organizations in Northern California. Everyone was cheering for all three of us, and we all got into the front of the room to take a picture of us three holding our medals. Everyone was happy and accomplished of the way  they played with.

It was a fun and exciting day of that season because everyone learned new things or made something old a little better with their game. I learned lots of new things from our coach and from our dad. We both accomplished that by working hard, and made things that are not so possible possible. Golf is a game from which you can learn from experience and make them better, and making   your mistakes better is by dreaming big and making goals to help you step by step to accomplish what you have in mind.
