SMHS Enters The Bullpen

IMG_6936

The baseball team has started their new season after their tryouts on February 4. Both Varsity and JV have been putting work into not just winning games, but winning in spirit. Varsity has played two home games, one on February 24 against Balboa High School where they won eight to three, and the other against Lowell High School on the 26, winning three to two.

JV has played two away games, one against Woodside on the 19 where they won nine to seven. Their first game was a great struggle, but they played a great game and ending up with a win. This first win made the team closer and helped them realize each other’s capabilities, so they will continue to play to each other’s strengths for the rest of the season. Their second game was on February 26 against Lowell High and they tied seven to seven.

The captains of the JV team, Murphy Dailey, sophomore, and Joey Borges, freshman, are mostly looking forward to their games against Hillsdale, as they believe they have improved as a team and as players since their last encounter with them. “Being on the team is a great pleasure because everybody loves to play and we prove that on the field,” said Dailey. Borges, a freshman, loves playing for SMHS baseball because of the energy and tries to stay positive throughout every game, regardless of whether the team is winning or not. He believes the spirit, along with working on small things, paid off and allowed the team to win against Woodside High School.

Many baseball players started out very young, some even starting in preschool as little t-ballers. These ballers have been playing for over 10 years because of their love of the sport, the experience, and more. “I’ve played baseball since I was a mere youngin and I continued to play because it makes me feel masculine, however true that may be,” said Dailey. “I’ve played it my whole life because it’s really fun,” said Borges.

Varsity has a game today at SMHS against Crystal Springs Uplands School at 4:00, and JV is playing at Evergreen Valley High at 4:00. Come out to support your fellow bearcats!
