Girls Varsity Tennis Off To A Good Start

libsportsAs we approach tennis season, the team seems confident. Last year, the SMHS varsity girls tennis team did very well, they made it to PALs but fell short. This year, “We lost three seniors and gained four new players,” said Head Coach Schuller. One of which, freshman Grace wang, was the subject of an article in the San Mateo Daily Journal. She is already in the starting line-up which is very uncommon for freshmen. SMHS tennis is 4-0 in all preseason matches and exhibitions, getting off to a great start.

Looking into the future, Schuller explained, “We have a lot of talent, and a lot of potential, and if the girls realize it and work hard we will do great.” Many times, Schuller spoke on the potential and his confidence in the team. He included that their chances of getting to PALs is very high.

This year’s roster is extensive, and they have many strong players on the team. “We have a very good team full of great potential,” said junior Lauryn Young. In their last preseason game, facing Crystal Springs, several matches resulted in blowout (large point deficit) in favor of SMHS. Three of the doubles matches resulted in a shutout – one team not scoring at all. The number one singles player, junior Ksenia Vasilyev, won her match with a large point gap.

The team started out the regular season with a bang. They have two matches during the week and a tournament on the weekend which consists of four matches all in one week. The first six matches of the year will be crucial in setting the tone for the rest of the season.

Throughout the team, the theme seemed to be confidence. Looking into the future Grace Wang  stated, “ I’m feeling optimistic for the season to come, we have the talent.” Every single player interviewed stated their excitement for the year and all the talent they have on the team. With a boost of talent and a strong coaching staff, SMHS Girls Varsity tennis is looking in great shape for the season.
