SMHS Girls Volleyball Jump into the New Season

volleyball-2Despite a rocky 2-game start to the preseason, the Varsity girls volleyball team has picked up their first win against Hillsdale High School, which will help prepare them mentally for their final preseason game against Half Moon Bay.

After the preseason is over, the Varsity team will be playing against Capuchino, Westmoor and Woodside high schools in the regular season. According to Head Coach Andoni Javellana, Mills High School is, “always a really tough defensive team,” but San Mateo is “not taking any [team] lightly.”

Setter Jazmine McDonald, senior,  is a key part of the team offense. She says that the team, “bonded by going on a picnic after a hike in Half Moon Bay.” Team bonding is a key part in any sport as it allows the players to connect and work better together. Coach Javellana says, “team bonding is an excellent way to understand more about each other, and what’s going on in everyone’s lives.

According to Jazmine, one of the team’s goals for this season is “to get first place in their league and move up from the Ocean division.” The team hopes to move up to the Bay league.

The Varsity team lost 7 valuable players who graduated last year. While this loss seemed like an issue, the team has confidence in their abilities and a desire to win.

Although Burlingame High School is generally our rival school, for volleyball, Mills High School is considered our greatest competitor and last year, the Varsity team lost to them with a score of 1 set to 3 sets. This season, the girls hope to avenge that loss.
