Trump’s Family will NOT be Living in the White House

What were once rumors about Trump and his family’s living situation are now confirmed. In January when Trump is sworn into office, his family will not be joining him in the White House. Trump’s wife, Melania, and his ten year old son, Barron, will remain living in Trump’s penthouse in downtown Manhattan.

The secret service is considering renting a floor in Trump Tower in order to protect the family while Trump is gone, bringing up a potential conflict of interest since Trump, as the landlord, would benefit financially from the arrangement, according to a CNN article titled “Donald Trump: Melania and Barron will not move to the White House initially” published on November 21. “The floor’s available to rent with the average floor office space running between 13,500 square feet to 15,500 square feet cost about $1.5 million a year,” Jared Horowitz, who is in charge of avalible tower space, told CNN in an article titled “Secret Service considering renting a floor at Trump Tower to protect future first family.”

Approximately one hundred secret service personnel will protect the family while staying at the tower. This level of security may in turn disrupt visitors and their experience in the Trump tower. After Barron completes his school year he and Melania plan to move into the White House. In the past, all presidents  have left their homes and had the whole family move into the White House. The only president who didn’t live with his family in the White House was George Washington, because it wasn’t yet built, according to www.whitehouse.gov. This will be the first time the tradition has been broken.

There are mixed opinions on the topic. “Honestly I think it’s a good idea for them (Melania and Barron) not to go into the White House yet because it will be hard for their son to move when he is still in school,” said Sianna Escalante, junior. “I don’t really care if they live in the White House or not,” said senior Cherokee Moon. Jamie Demelo finds it “weird for us because someone different (not Obama) will be living there.”

The fact that Melania and Barron won’t be immediately living in the White House probably won’t affect our country. However, it will be interesting to see how Trump lives by himself. Although the couple will be separated, technology will keep them up to date with each other.
