FC Barcelona’s Shaky Future

How did FC Barcelona become the limelight of the Catalan struggle for independence?

Catalonian has constantly been on the front page of the world newspaper for quite a while. It has been attempting to secede from Spain due to allegations of cultural discrimination from the capital.  It decided to hold a referendum for independence across the province. The day the people were due to vote, there was a home match between FC Barcelona and Las Palmas. The Spanish football team requested to game to be postponed due to their then hushed support. However, Spanish officials denied their request. A swift decision led the team to resolve to play in a closed stadium; no excited fans, big banners or any loud composition of cheers, only lonely echoes of the soccer ball being kicked around. the silence of the stadium yelled a powerful cry of fervent support.

Amid the chaos, individual team members have confirmed their stance on the revolution. The Barca defender Gerard Pique stated that he is more than willing to step down from the team if his backing of the vote is considered a problem.

When the heavy smoke cleared off a bit, FC Barcelona officially confirmed their future involvement in a countrywide strike against the violence portrayed by the police on the day of the poll.

A few days later, Catalonia declared independence, an act that enrages the Spanish federal government. Spain has taken actions to suppress the rebellion like calling for a snap election within the Catalan region. In the case that Catalonia does secede from Spain, what is the fate of Barca?

A path that people are speculating about is a possible exit from La Liga, the Spanish football league. FC Barcelona is currently the highest ranking team in the league while also holding 24 La Liga titles. However, the club’s president stated that as of current times “it is mutually beneficial for La Liga and Barcelona for that link to continue”.  However, Josep Maria Bartomeu also said Barca would have to consider the option of leaving if the future of Catalonia is a secession.

Another alternative for Barcelona is to join the English Premier League (EPL). However, “La Liga without Barcelona would be conceivably too damaging to both the club and the league.” said Al Jazeera’s sports correspondent Lee Wellings.

Unfortunately, the only way that the award-winning soccer team will be able to stay in La Liga while representing Catalonia as a separate sovereign state is an amendment to the laws.

FC Barcelona’s future depends on the independence of Catalonia. And Catalonia’s future is quite uncertain.
