Black History Month

Black History Month Throughout United States history, African Americans have been treated unequally and people seem to not to fight back or have protests but themselves. Black History Month came from “Negro History week,” which was originally in the second week of each February. This week was chosen since it includes the birthdays of Frederick Douglass, an African American social former and writer, on February 14th and Abraham Lincoln, the 16th U.S president who abolished slavery by passing the 13th Amendment, on February 12th.   Black History Month was created back in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson and association for…

The Destructive Culture of Social Media

Social media: it’s become so popular that it’s extremely rare to find someone without an account on any social platform. Everyone uses it, and it has taken over our daily lives. As much as we all love scrolling through our endless feed and flexing for the ‘gram, social media has a lot of downsides: and it’s not just our parents scolding us about it. Real research has been done, showing that there are lots of signs of addiction. Harvard neuroscientists Diana Tamir and Jason Mitchell at Harvard performed a study where participants were put under an fMRI scanner, and were…

Badminton season launches into action!

Badminton’s back, alright! One of lesser known sports at SMHS, the sport of badminton continues to grow among students. An intense, fast-paced racket sport, badminton involves hitting a shuttlecock or “birdie” back and forth across a net until it eventually drops. Coach Rachell Berania and Matt Fong are returning to take the reins this year. “This will be my second year coaching badminton at San Mateo High, but my fourth year coaching badminton for high school altogether.” Coach Rachell explains. After a rough last season, and with a new one with an entire batch of new players flooding in in…
