San Mateo Volleyball Season Kicks Off

The third and closing season of spring sports has opened a whole new opportunity for San Mateo High school students to get involved and represent their school.  Activities such as wrestling, golf, track and field, and volleyball, are some of the examples of the intriguing options  to play in the spring. One winter sport, boys volleyball, are looking to continue the good season put up by the girl’s team.

Volleyball, being one of the most widely  played sports by  both genders, has brought in many students of San Mateo to try out without feeling bashful. Ryan Savage, a freshman trying out for the volleyball team, is very excited for the upcoming season. One of the main reasons Savage is trying out is because his older sibling is very involved in volleyball. He heard it was  a fun sport to play and would also be a good source of exercise . Another reason he wants to try out is to become more apart of the San Mateo community.  There are so many opportunities for clubs and sports at San Mateo, he feels that it would be wrong  if he didn’t try out for a sport.

A more experienced volleyball player,  at San Mateo, Leo Viera, is excited for the upcoming season. Leo started to get into volleyball because he is Brazilian, and he wanted to get  touch with his Brazilian culture. His expectations for this season is to help the Bearcats win the league for the first time, get first team all league, and beat Aragon High School. His message for the athletes who want to try out is to “not be afraid and try out.” It is very easy to learn and you can grow as an athlete.

Out of the 13 games in the volleyball season the varsity boys went 6-6. They hope to make their mark on their opponents this season, wanting to cement San Mateo as the toppers of the league.
