Badminton season launches into action!

Badminton’s back, alright! One of lesser known sports at SMHS, the sport of badminton continues to grow among students. An intense, fast-paced racket sport, badminton involves hitting a shuttlecock or “birdie” back and forth across a net until it eventually drops. Coach Rachell Berania and Matt Fong are returning to take the reins this year. “This will be my second year coaching badminton at San Mateo High, but my fourth year coaching badminton for high school altogether.” Coach Rachell explains.

After a rough last season, and with a new one with an entire batch of new players flooding in in bloom, Coach R has high hopes and big plans for the team. “We have a young team this year and my goal is to be able to coach them not only in the fundamentals of badminton, but also be able to explain shot selection, efficiency and strategy- all the while having fun and teaching the importance of teamwork and team unity. I’m hoping for our team to place higher than last year and am foreseeing some close matches coming up.” she continues. There are currently 24 spots open for varsity.

The first game will be away against Hillsdale High School on March 1. New players are always welcome for next season, and the sport of badminton will only continue to get bigger until then. Coach R has one message for future players, “Hope to see you guys next year!”
