An amazing year for the wrestling team

So far, the wrestling team has had a fantastic season; they are currently undefeated. Wrestling is  a contact sport that involves grappling type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws and takedowns, joint locks, pins and other grappling techniques. The coach, Jason Cervantes, decided to take over the wrestling program as he too was a former wrestler and knew that if no one took over the position then the team would have dissolved. Compared to last season, the coach didn’t have to recruit since people willingly wanted joined. Although the sport isn’t as popular as the other sports at SMHS, the coach has stated that the team self promotes and he does as well throughout the school. This year the amount of players have increased from 18,  to a group of 26 talented and strong individuals. Due to many of the current members coming back from last year, “the team has been ranked higher due to their past experience” expressed the coach as he recalls how his wrestlers have been doing this year. They have been able to rank higher on the Central Coast Section, a ranking system used by all sports. If they end up doing well in their division, than they end up going to State.

The wrestling team trains Monday through Friday from four until six, practicing to polish their skills. Everyone gets to compete, making it possible that all the members of the team get a chance to go up against an opponent. The coach of the wrestling team has mentioned that the hardest thing he has to do as a coach is to be present at every duel a wrestler has. The easiest thing is the fact that the wrestlers work independently, they have to count on their own skills, the coach is just there to make sure they do the movements correctly.  Compared to other sports at San Mateo High School, the wrestling team hasn’t found the same amount of support that the other sports get. It’s disappointing that the wrestlers put in hard work only to not get the same level of audience that other sports get. Although they lack the support of the students of San Mateo High School, they still work diligently because they respect and love the sport.
