How Old is “Too Old” for Trick-or-Treating?

“Aren’t you a little old to be trick or treating?” is something many of us have heard at one time or another. Is there a select age at which it no longer becomes socially acceptable to go out with our friends in our costumes to gather Halloween candy that we can trade and devour at the end of the night? Some may argue yes, but here’s why trick-or-treating should be an ageless pastime enjoyed by all ages, especially teens. For the unfortunate souls who have not experienced the thrilling event of trick-or-treating, one usually dresses up in a costume of…

We Need to Get Serious About Shootings

Something needs to be done about shootings. America has a problem where we are 25 times more likely to die from gun violence in comparison to many affluent countries that have banned firearms or regulated them to a high degree according to Gifford’s Law Center. It seems as though many conservatives refuse to address the issue, and many liberals fight the wrong ones. Both have differing agendas that have lead to nothing but inaction. Familiar stories about individuals and families grieving over the loss of a loved one to a criminal with an agenda continue to plague news articles today….

How Boyan Slat Is Helping Solve The Great Pacific Garbage Patch

Sitting between California and Hawaii, five trillion pieces of plastic and about a sixth of the United States’ total garbage resides in an area known as the Great Pacific Patch. Trash in our oceans can cause many environmental problems: it destroys many marine animal habitats and kill marine animals and birds species alike. As of now, there are about 600 species of marine animals that are affected by plastic pollution in the Pacific Ocean. “I think that the situation in the Pacific Ocean is severe. A lot of animals and habitats are being destroyed. I think that people should start…

Youtube’s Yankovic turned Chinese TikTok Star: Bart Baker

In the early days of Youtube, one of the most notable content creators was Bart Baker, a Youtuber who made parody music videos of popular 2010s music. Baker had garnered a large following on YouTube off of creating these parodies, which dabbled in politically incorrect humor. “The edgier they were, the more views they’d get,” Baker said. His parodies of Miley Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball,” Katy Perry’s “Dark Horse,” and Nicki Minaj’s “Anaconda” all racked up more than 100 million views respectively and to this day, gave Bart Baker more than 3.1 billion views. But, after YouTube began demonetizing “vulgar” videos…

#TeamTrees

In May 2019, somebody commented on Reddit that Mr. Beast, a famous YouTuber, should plant 20 million trees to celebrate hitting the 20M subscriber milestone. After this comment went viral, Mr. Beast finally addressed it on October 25 in a video, saying that he was banding with the YouTube community, including a few famous YouTubers.  So, they struck a deal with The Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to planting trees started in 1872, that each dollar that would be donated to Team Trees they would plant one tree. It is difficult to plant 20 million trees without help, so…

Varsity Football

Main Ideas What players make a big impact  Good coaching staff 2-0 record positive Both games were shutouts  El Camino 21-0, Aragon 34-0 Aragon is typically a good team      The San Mateo HighSchool Varsity football team is looking really good after these first two games of the season. They have shut down the 2 teams so far meaning that they didn’t let the other team score a single point which is pretty impressive especially knowing you can probably kick like a 30 yard field goal for 3 points. That might show that the Defense might have a big impact on…

CA Bill Pushes School Start Times Back

California high schools, including ours, will soon be forced to start school after 8:30 a.m. The legislation (Senate Bill 328), signed by Gavin Newsom on October 13, requires schools to implement the new start times by the 2022-23 school year. Unfortunately, this means that most current sophomores, juniors, and seniors will no longer be attending high school by the time this law is put into effect. This law only applies to public and charter schools, excluding some rural districts. The reason people feel that school start times need to be pushed back is because students are not getting enough sleep,…

Why the Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars movie

On May 21 1980, Lucasfilm released “The Empire Strikes Back.” The sequel to “A New Hope,” “The Empire Strikes Back” was the second Star Wars movie released but was called episode 5 since it was the fifth movie chronologically. The movie is viewed as the best by many fans, with a 97% fan rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the highest of any Star Wars movie, as well as a 95% critics rating.  Fans like this movie for many reasons, one of which is the fact that the heroes don’t get a single victory throughout the entirety of the movie. Viewers found…

Pros and Cons of Energy Drinks

As school has become more and more stressful, energy drinks have grown significantly in popularity. Even though energy drinks taste great and offer teens energy, they are highly addictive and aren’t good for our health; therefore, I think that while occasional consumption is fine, teens shouldn’t be drinking energy drinks obsessively. Recently at school, many students have been seen drinking brands like Red Bull, Monster and Bang. Since then, energy drinks have become a trend and are shared between friends. Some teens even drink two or three per day, which can seriously affect their health. Energy drinks contain lots of…

Movies to Watch during Halloween

Many people enjoy horror movies, but which ones are actually worth your time? Which ones will leave you scared for days to come? While there have been many awful horror movies over the years, some of the best are “The Conjuring”, “The Joker”, “It”, “Insidious”, “Sinister”, and “28 Days Later”. “28 Days Later” was originally released back in 2002, yet it still remains one of the better horror movies. It was the original apocalypse-themed horror movie, and since then, hundreds of apocalyptic movies have been produced using the same ideas to scare people as 28 Days Later did back in…
