Fall Fashion

The start of a new school year brings with it an inevitable excitement for fall. Crisp, misty mornings, auburn, orange and golden leaves scattering the ground and, of course, the annual ritual of pulling out our fall and winter wardrobes from dusty boxes under our beds or the top shelves of our closets. Even though fall rolls around a bit late in California, San Mateo’s fashion conscious students are still excited about dressing for the season. “Fall is my favorite season to dress for. Winter is too cold, I don’t know what to wear in spring and in summer I…

Cody Brazil is a 20-year-old upcoming Bay Area artist. Originating in the East Bay, he has created a fan base for himself and his begun gaining popularity, touring with other rappers such a T. Mills. In an exclusive interview with The San Mateo Hi, Cody Brazil took some time to answer a couple of questions about his rap career.  How did you get you start? Review: House of Cards

This spring break, I decided to take up the majority of my free time diving into the highly recommended series, House of Cards. The series follows the story of dynamic duo Frank and Claire Underwood, a politically ambitious couple scheming their way to the top of the political hierarchy. Paralleling the Shakespeare classic, Macbeth, the storyline demonstrates the Underwoods’ insatiable thirst for political power and their ruthlessness in the process of achieving it. The Netflix-produced show really drew my eye because of its high critical praise and politically complex plot. When I sat down to watch the first episode of…

Justin Bieber Gets Roasted

Comedy Central’s Roast of Justin Bieber aired on March 30. Many haters couldn’t wait to see the singer get bashed by Kevin Hart, the Roastmaster of the night, Hannibal Buress, Chris D’Elia, Pete Davidson, Snoop Dogg, Natasha Leggero, Ludacris, Shaquille O’Neal, Jeff Ross, Martha Stewart, and (unexpectedly) Ron Burgundy. While the majority of jokes were hysterical, some went just a little too far, in my opinion. While Bieber definitely has generated enough material for comedians to make fun of for an entire show, it was clear that this was simply a way to better his reputation. Even Buress admitted that…

Summer Activities: Then and Now

The 1950s was an ideal time to be in California. You’ve seen it in movies, and you’ve read about it in books. Sparkling beaches and colorful diners have graced our big screens for generations. The ideal summer experiences of the fifties were not complete without the glamorous travel destinations. But where can we find these beaches and diners? In the fifties, one popular fad was roller rinks. Filled with neon lights and music, roller rinks were a destination for people of all ages. At the rinks, you would rent skates, and roll around on a hardwood floor. One of the…

Years & Years Concert Review

British invasion is no unfamiliar concept, but have you heard of indie synthpop band Years and Years? The band was founded in London, featuring lead singer Olly Alexander, bassist Mikey Goldsworthy and synth player Emre Turkmen. Alexander may be a familiar face, having appeared on British teen drama Skins as well as many films like God Help The Girl. Funny story on how he came to be apart of this trio — they heard him singing in the shower and decided that he might be a good addition to their band. I had the pleasure of seeing Years and Years…

Zayn Bids the World Farewell

The world changed on March 25, 2015. To many, music will never be the same again. Millions of “women” were in tears, shattered by the devastating news no one wanted to hear. Zayn Malik left sensational boy-band, One Direction. With a simple text-post on the band’s official Facebook, the entire world experienced the tragedy, mentally ripping up their One Direction posters, which are actually too precious to harm. Jokes aside, many fans foreshadowed the change, seeing as though Malik never fit well with the other four boys. The issue was not their mutual feelings or behavior, it relied more on…

Mulan Live-action

Earning over $330 million worldwide since its debut, Cinderella gave Disney a push to produce live-actions for other animated films. Another Alice in Wonderland movie is arriving in 2016 after the great success made by its first movie. Beauty and the Beast, coming in 2017, generates heat with Emma Watson’s enthusiastic tweets of her co-stars. But none of these upcoming productions beats the exciting live-action movie Disney announced to create recently—the giant animation will develop one for its most amazing animated movie, Mulan. The film first debuted in 1998. The story followed a young woman named Mulan, who has to…
