“Between the Shades of Gray” is an Inspiring Novel

“Between the Shades of Gray” is a moving novel written by Ruta Sepetys. The novel depicts the horrific scenes of the regime in the Soviet Union under Josef Stalin.   The story begins with Lina Vilkas, a fifteen-year-old budding artist, living in 1941 Lithuania.  As she is beginning to write a letter for her cousin Joanna, who recently moved to Germany, the Soviet Secret Police storm into her house and order her, as well as her brother and mother, to pack their bags. Lina later finds out that her dad was arrested separately for conspiring against the Soviets, and…

Twenty One Pilots Concert TOPS All Others

Twenty One Pilots hosted a concert in the SAP Center in San Jose on Friday, Feb. 10. And, let me tell you, it was utterly amazing. Twenty One Pilots, a duo consisting of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, first formed in 2009 in Columbus, Ohio. The band then consisted of Tyler, Chris Salih and Nick Thomas, but Salih and Thomas left in 2011; Josh joined shortly afterwards. They have released a total of four albums, with their most recent being “Blurryface” in 2015. They’ve been nominated for and have won countless awards over the past few years, with their single…

LEGO Batman Succeeds in Theaters

“The Lego Batman Movie” is a CGI Lego-inspired movie directed by Chris McKay and written by Seth Grahame-Smith, Jared Stern, Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers and John Whittington. McKay previously supervised animation on the very successful “Lego Movie,” which served as the basis for “The Lego Batman Movie.” Will Arnett stars as the cryptic Batman, with Zach Galifianakis voicing a surprisingly sensitive Joker and finally, Michael Cera as Batman’s adopted son, Nightwing (Robin).   After countless Batman films and comics (all of which the movie acknowledges), everyone accepts the fact that Batman has no problem outsmarting the same Gotham villains over…

La La Land Does Not Stick Landing

If there’s an “it” film of the year, it’s the Damien Chazelle-directed “La La Land.” Starring the dynamic duo of Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, “La La Land” tells the story of two struggling artists barely getting by in modern-day Los Angeles. With song and dance infused into its narrative, “La La Land” harkens back to the classic movie musicals of the mid-20th century, iconography and all. Though it boasts an outstanding cast, an infectious score and lush cinematography, “La La Land” feels uneven on the whole. The first third of the film is spectacular, living up to the hype…
