Jazz At Mateo

On February 9, San Mateo High School will host the annual Jazz At Mateo Concert. Bowditch, Borel, and Crocker middle schools will join SMHS in a night of jazz. From fast paced swing to sizzling Latin, this concert will have it all. Even if you aren’t familiar with jazz, this fun event is for you. When I was a freshman, I never really cared for jazz. Eventually, I went to my first jazz concert and festival at the College of San Mateo. Jazz bands ranging from middle school to college attended this event. I remember feeling overwhelmed by how many…

Can Music Change A Film?

In celebration of the incredibly successful Star Wars VII, an interesting question must be asked. How successful would the Star Wars franchise be if its famous and nostalgic soundtrack was completely different? Does the success of a movie lie within its music?           Filmmakers apply appropriate music to a scene to help emphasize the tone of the world the movie takes place in. A great example of this is the iconic shower scene from the classic horror film Psycho. Why is that particular scene so famous? The uneasy…

History of Valentine’s Day

Every year on February Fourteenth, gifts, candy, and flowers are exchanged between loved ones in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this St. Valentine? There are three different theories recognized by the Catholic Church. One legend says that Valentine was a priest during the third century in Rome. Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men because he believed single men made better soldiers than ones with wives. Valentine protested against this law and performed marriages for young couples in secret. This Valentine was eventually martyred when he was caught.         There are other stories that suggest that Valentine…

Rad or Fad: Socks & Sandals

The duo is back! In recent weeks, many people, specifically San Mateo High schoolers, have been trying out the style. We even had an entire day dedicated to it as part of Lazy Week. I believe it’s finally time to let socks and sandals bask in the glorious spotlight where they belong. Socks and sandals are a beautiful paradox, the model choosing to wear a revealing and open shoe but still protecting their feet with a warm layer of cloth. I see the style as an opportunity. I am blessed with the opportunity to show off my cute socks while…

Tumblr is Toxic

We’ve welcomed you to social media many times before. We’ve told you about its benefits, we’ve told you about its consequences. But it’s never clear what the internet really has to offer. And the deep web isn’t the only dark network we know of. If any of you have used Tumblr before, you could guess where this is going. But for those of you that haven’t- Tumblr is a microblogging platform and social networking site that allows users to post media and other content onto a self-run semi-blog. Sounds sweet right? Sure, if used correctly. What you’re not hearing is…

Join The Chaiphy Movement

What do Drake, The Beastie Boys, and Mac Miller have in common? They are all Jewish rappers! For decades, Jews have been killing the rap game but their religious affiliation has been overlooked. I’ve been accused countless times of being “too white” and “too Jewish” to appreciate the genre even though we’ve clearly proven our place in the rap industry. The Beastie Boys formed in July 1981 in New York City. The band consisted of Michael “Mike D” Diamond, Adam “MCA” Yauch, Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz for most of its active years. Most of their music falls under the genre of…
