San Mateo’s own hardcore/metal band

“Danger: Diversity” is San Mateo School District’s own metal band, composed of Kiran Chettipally- MHS (bass), Colin Mendoza- SMHS (guitar), Luis Garcia Hidalgo- SMHS (drums), Luis Garcia Barros- SMHS Alumni (guitars),  and Quinn Hughes- SMHS (vocals). They have recently booked their first show, Battle of the Bands, in San Francisco at the DNA lounge on December 20. The band started as a side project between Colin Mendoza and Luis Garcia during the summer of 2015 due to their shared interest and similar taste in music. They felt that it should be more than just a side band and decided…

Bearcats being spooked

Even though we live in a generally safe community, some really spooky things have been happening to us, and people in California in general. When you get super spooked, adrenaline starts pumping throughout your body and your heart rate increases massively. Although some may be as small as a petty theft or as large as a home robbery, many SMHS students have lived through a spooky experience.. Here’s junior Bruno Brasileiro’s most frightening experience. “It was a regular evening in Brazil, my grandmother asked my cousin and I to pick up some medicine for her at a pharmacy, and in…

New Music!

Friday the 13th, 2015 was a huge day for the pop music industry. Both well known and emerging artists released new albums  inspiring great excitement in their loyal fans. One Direction’s new album titled “Made in the AM,” features seventeen new songs and a brand new sound. This album shows the boys’ more mature side. They played a large part in writing their songs and added a more calm, rock twist to the pop album. Many people didn’t even think it was them when their first single, titled “Infinity,” dropped on September 22, 2015. “I didn’t think it was them…

Why is Classical Music Becoming Less Common?

I absolutely love classical music yet many ignore or even forbid it from their lives. So why do I love classical? In every classical piece, every note you hear has a purpose and a story behind them. The entire piece depicts how the composer feels about memory. It’s not just the notes that make the music. It’s also the silence in between every phrase. Those moments of silence represent a time of tension, rest, or even a breath. It’s a universal concept that words fail to describe music, but that’s especially the case with classical. The only way to fully…

Love stories: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secret of the Universe Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s novel tells the beautiful story of a friendship between two Mexican-American teens growing up in southern California. Representation of POC in novels is seriously lacking, so the story of two young mexican boys struggling with their identities is refreshing.  The new spin on the classic manic pixie dream girl and more serious subject material make this love story unique. Eleanor and Park The dual narrative of Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor and Park tells the story of two social outcasts’ high school romance.  Their story is realistic, raw,…

Wavves “V” review

After two years, surf-rock band, Wavves are back with”V,” their  fifth full length studio album. After forming in 2008, guitarist/singer Nathan Williams and his bandmates have released four studio albums and each has been met with critical acclaim from several music websites including Spin.com and Pitchfork. Although the album may sound cheerful, the lyrical content suggests otherwise.  As usual Williams has an almost nihilistic view on his surroundings. “Have I lived too long? Why does my head hurt?” Williams sings from the first single “Heavy Metal Detox.” In terms of lyrics, Williams outdoes himself by giving the listener an insight…
