Lady Bearcats Bring The Action

  Our lady bearcats are jumping into action for an all new season of intensive volleyball. These girls have been practicing for weeks. Although their first game was cancelled, they are still hyped up to what they got this year. For a lot of new players this is there first time playing. Freshman, Jada Walker joined the JV volleyball team “because it’s fun and I have always wanted to play.” Even though this is not her favorite sport, she still enjoys bringing the pressure to our rivals. Ben Flieshman, New Student Teacher

Ben Fleishman, student teacher for Mr. Teague, had come to San Mateo High through the Stanford Student Teacher Program. According to Mr. Teague, “Mr. Fleishman has already shown he is going to be a great teacher in the past couple weeks.” Some accomplishments that he is proud of is getting into Berkeley (before he went to Stanford), writing a thesis, which is a 40-page essay in order to graduate, and having a lot of cool friends. San Mateo Promotes Message of Equality with Ally Week

San Mateo High School celebrated “Ally Week” during the week of April 15-19.  The event, led by senior Hannah Poplack and the Gay Straight Alliance, was a week-long program of events designed to fight homophobia, promote equality and acceptance, and combat bullying in the San Mateo community. During the two weeks leading up to the event, over 100 students and staff members had their photos taken for an “I am an Ally because…” photo, stating why they support gay rights, what it means for them be an ally, and in many cases, sharing personal experiences.  The poster display was put…

Freshman Perform the Odyssey

  Instead of taking a multiple choice final, or writing an essay, freshman in AS English classes performed their own abridged play.  Clad in togas, crowns, beards, and dresses, Ms. Hoffman’s students spent the morning of their final performing their own abridged version of The Odyssey in front of the fireplace in the library.  The performance came as a chance for students to dive deeper into their reading, and add their own twist to the dialogue.  Students memorized and performed their lines in full costume  in from of their class and a host of visitors.
