Swimming Update

It’s a new swimming season, and SMHS is now busy recruiting. The results are extraordinary so far: several boys have begun their first season on Feb 3, and the girl’s team size has doubled. Most of the new swimmers are freshmen, and their expectations are high. “We had a great season last year and our girls team won the championship in PAL and several of them went to CCS,” said Andy Kwang, a sophomore. He has been swimming for one year before he joined the SMHS swim team. Last year, the Girls swim team was undefeated and the swimmers are ready…

Not only do new underclassmen even out the members in the team, but new goals surface to be achieved as well. “This is my 25th year coaching and I am more excited this year,” says Coach Riley, noting that the “chemistry” on the team seems to…

Badminton season takes off with enthusiasm

Thats right, the spring sport season comes around once more, and one of the most popular spring sports at SMHS is Badminton. The team is divided into two groups: exhibition, whose badminton players just practice and aren’t obligated to play during games. If they have extra time at the end, they usually practice at the games. The Varsity badminton group has an obligation to go to every game, “They are a bit more competitive than exhibition, but I think exhibition is more fun,” said Josh Tan. During practices Badminton players first warm up their legs by running around the gym,…

Sports Jerseys, Not Souvenirs

Every year when a sports season rolls around uniforms are provided for the athletes from the school. What happens when an athlete doesn’t return a jersey after the season has ended? Money that could have been used to buy new sports equipment is blown away, because one or two people “forgot to bring them in”. UNIFORMS ARE NOT CHEAP!  All sports jerseys vary in prices, meaning, a football jersey is more expensive than a soccer jersey, but a basketball jersey can be more expensive than both of them. The price of a jersey can range from $25 to $150 per…

Futsal for All: Students Root for Indoor Soccer

Last year, SMHS introduced a new sport to the school: Indoor Soccer. At the beginning of the semester of last year, Ms. Woolfolk asked the ELD students to take a survey about how to make the school better. They all agreed that the school would be even better if they had futsal, another way of saying indoor soccer. Fifty-Six students signed up for the fall season, which meant that there would be seven players in each team, with a total of 8 teams. In ten weeks of Futsal, totaling to 20 games, each would be 10-12 minutes long. The Indoor…
