Coach John The girls’ tennis team has a new assistant coach for the 2016-2017 season. John Daquioag, who likes to be called Coach John, also coaches the boys’ tennis team and is a welcome addition to the girls’. Coach John is “relaxed and great with one-on-one assistance,” said Freshman Grace Wang. Many of the players felt that Coach John and Coach Schuller work very well together. “They are both relaxed but very focussed on making us better,” said Senior Ariana Berta. SMHS Girl’s Tennis By Maya Rijhwani The San Mateo High Girl’s Tennis Team is ready for war! Their tryouts were on August 14th and they are prepared to compete! The Girl’s Tennis Team crushed the competition last year. They won the majority of their games with only a couple of losses. Girls Tennis Team Serves up a Spectacular Start to the Season
Having several productive practices and winning the first match of the league, the girls tennis team is off to a great start this season. With a large team of twentysix players, there is a lot of talent to go around. The team consists of ten freshmen, ten sophomores, five juniors and one senior. Meeting every Monday and Wednesday for practice with two games a week, they are getting lots of practice and are improving everyday. The players are feeling supported and confident. Boys’ Tennis Team Update
The boys’ tennis team has been progressing finely with practices and games. Their season ends mid-April, but until then, they will still face off with other schools, both in and out of the San Mateo Union High School District. The next few home games are against Aragon on April 9th, Mills on April 16th, and Burlingame on April 18th, all starting at 4:00 p.m. Come and support them! Boys’ Tennis Starts
Boys’ tennis, a spring sport, started in late January and has progressed with after-school practices and several exhibition matches during February. The exhibition matches played against Riordan High (home) and Hillsdale High (away) were won, and the team tied with Woodside (away). Games against El Camino (home) on February 28th, Capuchino (home) on March 1st, and Oceana (away) on March 4th will be played soon. Stay tuned for more information on upcoming games. A Tough Week for Boys Tennis
The Boys Tennis teams did very good this week. A total of 3 games for both the Varsity and the Frosh Soph teams. All the player tried their hardest to try and pull a win for our school. The Varsity team first played against El Camino at El Camino on March 29, 2011. It was a clear win for San Mateo winning [6-1].
