Varsity Bearcats Dominate

With the season rapidly coming to an end, the Varsity volleyball team has managed to tie for first in the league with Woodside High School, both having nine wins and one loss record. The girls have a 5 game win streak as of October 24, which will hopefully help them prepare for their next game against Woodside on October 27. Outside of league, the Bearcats are 15-10, but have improved their level of play greatly in the league games. Head Coach Andoni Javellana says San Mateo is “not taking any [team] lightly” which is key to their dominance in league…

SMHS Girls Volleyball Jump into the New Season

Despite a rocky 2-game start to the preseason, the Varsity girls volleyball team has picked up their first win against Hillsdale High School, which will help prepare them mentally for their final preseason game against Half Moon Bay. After the preseason is over, the Varsity team will be playing against Capuchino, Westmoor and Woodside high schools in the regular season. According to Head Coach Andoni Javellana, Mills High School is, “always a really tough defensive team,” but San Mateo is “not taking any [team] lightly.” Setter Jazmine McDonald, senior,  is a key part of the team offense. She says that…

Freshman, Jada Walker joined the JV volleyball team “because it’s fun and I have always wanted to play.” Even though this is not her favorite sport, she still enjoys bringing the pressure to our rivals. Along with a whole week of tryouts after school, summer clinics were held to…

Volleyball Jumps Into Action at the Net

This year the volleyball teams are better than ever. Lets travel back to when the volleyball tryouts were and hear how they went. When asked how the tryouts were and their predictions for the season, Lexus Kato and Alexa Carreon, freshmen, on the JV team said, “The tryouts were very good. They pushed us to do our best and I think we will be very successful this season.” Isabella Mauricio, senior, who is on the Varsity team, was asked the same questions and she said, “ The tryouts were very good and I think we will have really good…

We Dig Boys Volleyball

Our Boys Volleyball team has been taking the sport by storm. Taylor Ho, junior and captain of the team, came to Mr. Scheller with the idea for a team before school began in order to practice in the off-season of his club team. “My favorite part about this team is seeing how kids with no volleyball experience drastically improve in just a couple of weeks,” said Taylor. The team is filled with guys eager to learn more about and improve in the sport, as well as win their games. “It’s not as easy as other people would think it is,”…
