GOP Visits SMHS

The Patriot Club of San Mateo, also referred to as the Young Republicans club, hosted a guest speaker during lunch on Tuesday, March 19: Luis Buhler, head of the Bay Area GOP and bayareagop.com. Buhler spoke to the club about the foundation of the Republican party and what the future holds for the presently troubled political group. “Currently, the GOP is in a process of self-examination and analysis,” he said. Buhler talked about the importance of young people and what Republican values appeal to them in particular. “There are four key things that affect young people: (1) education, (2) jobs,…

Five Bearcats–Natalie Rejas, Vivian Chuang, David Huang, Luna Chang, and Savannah Liu—are having their art exhibited in the California Youth Art Show at History San Jose! The exhibition will be at the Leonard and David McKay Gallery at the Pasetta House at 1620 Senter Road from March 2to May 1 from 11am to 4 pm with free admission. The exhibit displays a wide range of two-dimensional as well as three-dimensional art created by students throughout the Bay Area. I, for example, submitted a marker drawing inspired by one of my favorite bloggers. This event is for Youth Art Month, which…

Leadership Made Health Awareness Fun for an Entire Week

February was the month for fun-filled activities and sales in the quad at lunch to celebrate Health Week 2013.  Leadership had stands selling T-shirts saying, “Be Cute and Eat Fruit.” Artfully decorated, a lot of these shirts were sold along with headbands, bracelets and banana grams. You could also find fun, healthy food. On Thursday, a dance called “Zumba” was performed. Friday was the last chance for students to buy cool merchandise. Friday was also the only day where popular Jamba Juice smoothies were sold. Health week was a great, inspiring effort to take care of our student body.

JSA Members Go to the Fall State Overnight Convention

Akshaya Natarajan, a junior and leader of SMHS’ JSA chapter, organized our school’s trip to the Fall State convention. A “chapter” refers to an individual school’s club. The convention was located at a Marriot in Santa Clara, California. Over 800 JSA members attended from Northern California’s JSA chapters. There were so many debate topics, the possibilities felt endless. During breakfast, lunch, and dinner, students could decide to walk to any restaurant they wanted to go to and were encouraged to make new friends from other JSA chapters. On Saturday night, our JSA chapter decided to have a chapter dinner at…
