Ferguson Takes it Back to the 1960’s

Michael Brown, an unarmed, 18 year old African American teenager, was shot and killed by white police officer, Darren Wilson, last August in Ferguson, Missouri. Even after Michael was cowered on the ground, Wilson continued to shoot him about three more times. Had this been a white man that was shot, all hell would have broke loose. There is absolutely no justification for shooting Michael Brown, let alone six times. What is even more alarming than his shooting is how the Ferguson police and media are handling it. After being shot, Michael Brown’s body was left in the street for…

The Dark Side of the Porn Industry

According to covenanteye.com’s porn statistics, there have been 600,440,991, and counting, online searches for porn since 2014.  The porn industry makes between 10 and 14 billion dollars in annual sales. As quoted from the Huffington Post, “porn sites get more visitors than Netflix, Amazon, and Twitter combined.” But, would users still find porn desirable if they knew the disgusting, vile things that happen behind the camera? Porn is not as simple as two people having sex on camera for money. Female porn stars are usually manipulated, abused, and raped. Women become porn stars believing it will give them a ‘glamorous’ life….

Rape Culture is Everywhere

*Warning this article includes talk of rape and sexual violence and might be triggering to some people No one is in favor of rape, right? Wrong, many people qualify their opinion. “A person goes to a party and gets so drunk, they pass out. Then they are raped. Whose fault is it?” Some would reply the rapist, but others would reply the victim. Why is our society so confused about rape? Rape is forced sex without consent. It is one of the most horrendous crimes that could ever be committed. While the physical damage left to the victim might…

Gatorade vs. Izzes

Gatorades and Izzes are both served every day at San Mateo High at lunch. Which drink is better for you? Factually speaking, Izzes are far better for you than Gatorades are. Yet, people seem to favor Gatorade over Izzes. Gatorade is a sports drink. It was made for sole purpose of rehydrating people after vigorous workouts. It contains a large amount of carbohydrates and electrolytes to help replace the ones lost during your workout. That being said, if you don’t work out, drinking Gatorade isn’t good for you. You don’t need any extra energy. Izze is a carbonated fruit drink….

Dumb Things Politicians Say

Sometimes people say stupid things, and sometimes those people are politicians, so I’ve decided to gather the most idiotic quotes from politicians around the U.S. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try and shut the whole thing down.”- Missouri representative, Tom Akin, and licensed physician. “We should understand that you don’t deal with nations like Russia and China by embracing arm-in-arm and singing kumbaya.”- Texas senator, Tom Cruz. Weird, I thought that’s what we’re supposed to do. “Women are best suited for secretarial work, decorating cakes and counter sales, like selling lingerie.” – Larry Koon,…

Halloween Costumes Suck for Girls

Halloween will soon be over and done with, but not my disgust with the over sexualized costumes for females. During my search for this year’s costume, it was nearly impossible to find a Halloween costume that didn’t involve having my chest and legs on display. Even costumes for young girls were outrageously revealing. But why have female-bodied costumes become so sexualized? It’s simple, sex sells – that doesn’t mean it’s okay though. It means society portrays females as nothing more than commodities for sexual satisfaction. Male-bodied costumes aren’t sexualized at all. When I was shopping for a superhero costume, the…

Cultural Appropriation

What is cultural appropriation? Cultural appropriation is “one culture taking parts from another culture.” When someone dresses up as a Native American for Halloween or wears bindis and henna because it’s ‘trendy’ – that is cultural appropriation. Hipsters run around wearing American Indian war bonnets and headdresses, but it’s rude, ignorant, and disrespectful. The bonnet is highly spiritual to American Indians and it could take a person their whole life just to receive three eagle feathers on it. So, when “cool” kids run around wearing headdresses like it is no big deal, it takes away the meaning behind it. Remember this…

Insidious Chapter Two

The famous master of horror movies James Wan released the next part of Insidious called Insidious Chapter Two on Friday, September 13. Many have been talking about their frightened reactions to the Insidious movie part one from 2011, a movie about a family in desperate need to help their son Dalton Lambert, who is stuck in a coma after he fell over in an attic. The doctors don’t know what he is diagnosed with and months later his parents are sure that the house is haunted because of many abnormal activities. Dalton’s parents call ghost hunters and investigators over and…

Preserving The Right To Life

There are two main reasons I am pro-life. The first and most important reason is all in the title–life. The process of human life begins at conception and it’s proposterous that someone can argue that the “real” beginning is some arbitrary point dictated by the Supreme Court. In his speech “Why Abortion is Bad For America,” Senator Marco Rubio addresses arguments against calling a fetus a “life.” One claim is that an embryo is not a person yet. “Well, if it’s not a person, then what is it?” asked Rubio. “If you left it alone, that’s the only thing it…

GOP Visits SMHS

The Patriot Club of San Mateo, also referred to as the Young Republicans club, hosted a guest speaker during lunch on Tuesday, March 19: Luis Buhler, head of the Bay Area GOP and bayareagop.com. Buhler spoke to the club about the foundation of the Republican party and what the future holds for the presently troubled political group. “Currently, the GOP is in a process of self-examination and analysis,” he said. Buhler talked about the importance of young people and what Republican values appeal to them in particular. “There are four key things that affect young people: (1) education, (2) jobs,…
